For our next party, the dessert table will be a round table in the middle of a space with very high ceilings. And that means our dessert table will need height, too. Since the table is round, I started thinking about hat boxes to elevate my cake stand. The shopping fairies were not on my side, and I couldn’t find just the right shade of pink hat box. (OK – I only tried one store.) But I did get inspired by some Christmas tutus for toddlers: would one of those tutus make a fabulous skirt for my hat box?

I had the complete pleasure of working with my client Angie this spring and summer on a Custom Party Plan for her daughter’s first birthday party. Angie’s daughter’s name is Violet, so we agreed that a purple-toned flower fairy party was in order. Her party was this Saturday and I’m so thrilled to be able to bring you the photos. I think Angie did an amazing job!

This is the party that started me on the path to my second job in children’s party planning. Last year, for Meg and Grace’s sixth birthday, they asked for a fairy party. I just couldn’t go the Disney route but discovered instead Cicely Mary Barker’s classic fairy illustrations and the girls were just as happy to go in a more original direction. For my twins’ 6th birthday, they wanted a Tinkerbell party. I feel overwhelmed by Disney and off-the-shelf party themes, so I talked up the idea of a “flower fairy” party instead. They loved the concept, and choose our colors — pink and green.

My inspiration was the incredibly detailed pop-up book How to Find Flower Fairies by Cicely Mary Barker. Her vintage illustrations were just the style of fairies I was looking for. Read more →
